These programs, designed for 8 – 11 year-olds combine the engagement of hands-on learning with dynamic content to bring history to life. Using the Strawbery Banke neighborhood as a backdrop, each session begins with a multimedia PowerPoint introducing the topic for the month. Students then spend four classes engaging in games, crafts, and hands-on projects with simple materials most families have on-hand. A list of necessary materials is provided at least one week in advance. Students have access each week to a private website linking families to other projects, additional readings, and a variety of resources further assisting the students’ understanding of American history. Classes meet Tuesdays at 9:00AM and last for 45 minutes. The cost is $40 per session/$30.00 for SBM Members. Register for multiple classes and receive $5.00 off each session. Class members get a 50% discount on the homeschool day offered that month.

Coming to America

Through an examination of primary source materials such as probate records, court documents, government data and personal papers, students will explore pivotal moments in American history.  Classes will focus on putting events and sources into context, exploring how historians gather information, and developing interpretations about the past from multiple perspectives.  Students will hone their research skills while gaining confidence sharing their unique ideas. Included with the call each week is access to a private website linking students to additional readings, valuable internet sources and hands-on projects that can supplement class discussions and themes. From Festival to Feast: A History of Thanksgiving – November 19, 2020

Discover the origins of Thanksgiving and how it has become the uniquely American holiday we celebrate today. Through a combination of footage of houses and roleplayers at Strawbery Banke to a variety of games that foster engagement, experience the magic of Strawbery Banke Museum without leaving home.

Hearth Cooking Bake Along December 17, 2020

Join a trained hearth cook and discover what it was like to cook over an open hearth. See what tools were used, learn where different foods came from and follow an authentic recipe from the 1700s. A modern day version of the recipe will be sent in advance and participants are welcome to bake along!

Visit Mr. Stavers, Colonial Tavern Keeper – January 21, 2021

Visit Mr. Stavers to hear all about life in a Colonial tavern. What kinds of food does he serve? Who are his customers? Is he a patriot or loyalist? How many children does he have? Do miss the chance to go back to 1777 and ask Mr. Stavers all your questions!

Victorian Tea with Mrs. Goodwin – February 18, 2021

Travel back to 1870 and join Mrs. Goodwin for afternoon tea. Hear stories about her childhood, the amazing changes she has witnessed throughout the 19th-century and learn about the games her grandchildren play, including the new-fangled game called baseball. Bring your tea and biscuits and get ready for a one-of-a-kind tea party.

Programs take place the third Thursday of every month from 2:30 – 3:00pm. Cost is $10 per person/$20 for a family and 20% off for SBM Members. Students registered for a homeschool class that month receive 50% off.
